Reducing Scar Tissue with Essential Oils

Did you know that essential oils can  promote the healing of wounds that result in virtually no scarring and can minimize the appearance of old scar tissue?

Some of the oils that may be beneficial for scars are:

Singles:  frankincense, sandalwood, cypress, elemi, rose, cistus, myrrh, helichrysum,  lavender

Blends: Gentle Baby, Australian Blue, 3 Wise Men

Interestingly, sandalwood and myrrh are high in sesquiterpenes while frankincense, cypress, and elemi are high in monoterpenes.  Why is that worth mentioning?  Because sesquiterpenes deprogram faulty information recorded in DNA and monoterpenes mend and repair the damage to your cells.  You can see why using essential oils with these compounds could be beneficial when applied to scar tissue!

To prevent scars from forming, try this recipe taken from the Essential Oils Desk Reference (Fifth Edition):

Scar Prevention Recipe:

  • 2 drops helichrysum
  • 3 drops lavender
  • 4 drops myrrh
  • 1 drop sandalwood

The EODR also recommends  a few supplements that may give the skin what it needs to heal:  Super C, Super C Chewable, Sulfurzyme, Power Meal, MegaCal, Mineral Essence, and Essentialzyme.

Finally, the following “Scar-B-Gone” recipe was recently included in the Raindrop Messenger:

“Scar-B-Gone” Essential Oil Recipe as Formulated by D. Gary Young

Scar-B-Gone Recipe

10 drops helichrysum
6 drops lavender
8 drops lemongrass
4 drops patchouli
5 myrrh
1 ounce V-6

MIX IN THE ORDER GIVEN (VERY important!!!), rolling the bottle between your palms after adding each oil.  Apply topically at least 3-4 times a day.

This formula is credited to D. Gary Young and was made available to the public by Nancy Sanderson from Wyoming, Gary’s sister. Regarding the individual oils comprising the Scar-Be-Gone formula, Myrrh has been used to heal scar tissue (including abdominal stretch marks after giving birth) since Biblical Times and before.

Lavender oil has been known to heal gangrene, as it did in the case of Rene Gattefosse, PhD, the chemist who rediscovered the healing properties of essential oils in the early 20th century and who coined the term, “Aromatherapy.” Lavender oil healed Dr. Gattefosse’s rapidly developing gas gangrene resulting from a severe burn by an accident in his laboratory.

Gangrene is dead, or nearly dead, tissue that turns black and crusty from lack of circulation caused by a wound or burn. “Gas gangrene” is gangrene that has become infected with bacteria.

Application of Lavender oil has also been reported to save a leg when doctors were about to amputate due to gangrene. The progressive decay of live tissues from gangrene generates strong toxins that can cause death to the individual if the toxins begin to circulate through the the rest of the body. That is why doctors almost always prescribe amputation for a gangrenous limb. Application of Lavender oil is a better alternative and leaves the patient intact.

Scar-Be-Gone, which contains Lavender Oil, is an even stronger, more effective blend than any of its constituent oils alone.

Here are some experiences of how others have used therapeutic-grade essential oils to prevent or reduce their scars:

Scar Tissue: 10 Helichrysum, 6 Lavender, 8 Lemongrass, 4 Patchouly, 5  Myrrh mixed with 1 oz. V-6.

I made this blend for a little 3 year old girl who had fallen out of bed and scraped her forearm just below the elbow.  The scrape enlarged until her parents had to take her to a doctor.  They found out that it was staph infection she had gotten at the time of birth.  Antibiotics didn’t help so they had to go in and scrape the bone before it would heal.  From doing that it caused a lot of scar tissue and she could not bend her arm without crying out in pain.

Her dad asked me what could help her and I told him I would do some research and see if I could come up with something.  I went home and studies my books and notes from Gary’s classes and came up with this blend.  After a week of using this blend I asked him how she was doing and he started to cry.  Thank you, Thank you, she can run and play without hurting her arm now.

Well, four years ago I had a booth at the winter fair and some teenage girls stopped by and was asking about the oils and what they could do.  One girl had horrible scar tissue on her neck, chest and on her  forehead.  She had, had surgery and the scars grew.  I told her about this blend and made it up and gave it to her asking her to let me know if it worked.  I never did hear from her until this spring 2005 when I was at the winter fair again, these two girls stopped by my booth and one gal said these are the oils I was telling you about to her friend.  I asked her what she knew about Young Living and she said you remember giving my friend some oil for her scars?  I perked right up and said yes, how is she doing?  Great!  “She used the oil blend you gave her and all her scars are gone.”  “It’s like she never had them!”  WOW!!!!!   Nancy Sanderson

Last September, I had a spinal fusion surgery due to a ruptured disc in my neck. Following my upline’s advice, as soon as I was cleared to put neosporin on the scar, I began putting lavender on it two to three times a day.

Lavender bottle sprigWhen I went for my six week follow up appointment with the surgeon, he was stunned by how wonderful the scar looked! He said it was healing faster and better than any scar he had ever seen in his 20+ years of doing neck surgeries!

At my three month appointment, the scar was scarcely noticeable. Again, he was amazed and he kept asking what my secret was and how my scar was healing so quickly.

In April, six months after the surgery, we went to visit family whom we had not seen since the surgery. Despite the scar being on the front of my neck, most of them didn’t even notice it until my husband pointed it out to them! My brother-in-law, a physical therapist, said it looked like it was a year or two old scar, not less than 6 months!

I now recommend lavender oil to anyone who is preparing for surgery or has any sort of stitches or staples. – Heather S.

I was playing “Betty Crocker” and trying to prepare for a dinner party. I was baking a pie and reached into the oven to take it out. My forearm touched the heating unit just as the doorbell rang!! I didn’t have time to soak in cold water (my old remedy) so I grabbed my Lavender and put one drip on it. It took the heat out the instant that it touched my arm. I forgot about it and went on with my dinner party.

It never blistered, but I didn’t repeat the lavender and it did scar about the size of a 50 cent piece. After about 2 years, a friend of mine who also is into the oils, asked me why I had a scar when I have the oils!! So I started using the oils on it and the scar is now gone. – Jan D.

After my last surgery I had started to use lavender on my surgical scars. I was hoping it would get rid of the redness of the incision scars. I was amazed at how fast the scars were fading. They were significantly reduced within 6 weeks of putting the oil on morning and night.

This was 6 months after my surgery and the scars were so much better after 6 weeks then they had been in 6 months. The lavender oil did what I was hoping it would do but what I was not expecting was how the lavender oil got rid of the deep built up scar tissue on my breast! I had about 1 1/2″ thick scar tissue that ran along my incision scar on my left breast and some pockets were deep scar tissue was forming. They disappeared!

I couldn’t believe it. I am a massage therapist and had been doing friction and rolling techniques to reduce the scar tissue buildup, but it was really thick and could not be rolled. It was what we call glued down.

After using the lavender oil for about 8 weeks, I could roll my skin on my breasts as easily as I could roll the skin on the back of my hand! I was amazed. That was my confirmation on how the oils can work for us. I am now passionate about the oils. I carry them with me and use them daily. – Heidi W.

I had heard/read about lavender being good for cuts, scrapes, scratches, etc. I was skeptical until someone saw a few inflammed cat scratches on me, whipped out a bottle of lavender oil, and applied for me. I was amazed the next day when I looked in the mirror and wondered where the red scratches were. They disappeared in 2 days.

I am dark-skinned of Asian ancestry and always scar easily and often with even the slightest sore. I now apply lavender on any broken skin and watch my skin heal differently–a lot faster and without inflammation which always produced heavy scarring. Wow, with lavender, my scarring is now minimal to zilch!  – Joanie K.

My 15 year old niece had keloid scarring down the middle of her chest from open-heart surgery when she was a young child. We mixed 20 drops of Lavender with 20 drops of Palo Santo and 40 drops of V6 mixing oil. She applied a few drops of this mixture, twice a day, to the scars and, by the end of that first batch of custom-blending oil running out, she has had noticeable improvement in her scars; they are much less red, reduced in size and height, and literally gone in some areas.

Her mom is ordering her own supply of Lavender & Palo Santo & V6 for further use so I will report back again soon. I expect her scars will almost completely disappear…and this is on scars that are more than 10 years old. – Cherie B.

I had a cosmetic surgery procedure and was told by my doctor to use Mederma for the scarring after about three weeks. Instead, I decided to try using essential oils. For 3-4 times a day, I massaged a couple drops each of helichrysum and lavender into the incisions. When I returned to see the Dr. for my 3 month check-up, he couldn’t believe how great I was healing, especially since I was in my mid-40′s.

I then advised him I wasn’t using Mederma, but instead I used essential oils. He was stunned and asked about them, saying he would be telling his other patients!! It’s now 2 years later, and my regular Dr. just commented that my scars look more like 8 or 9 yrs old instead of just 2 yrs!  Remember–consistency is key with oils!! – Beth O.
