Have you heard about lemongrass?
While lemongrass is a delicious addition to East Indian and Oriental cooking, the essential oil is an outstanding natural remedy that supports good health in a variety of ways.
Aids mental clarity and focus. When diffused or inhaled, lemongrass wakes up the left brain, clearing foggy thoughts, increasing logical thinking and stimulating concentration. Any time the brain needs to be focused and alert, lemongrass is useful.
Increases circulation. Because of its ability to strengthen the blood vessels and encourage healing of weak connective tissue, lemongrass can be applied topically* to support healing of pulled ligaments and tendons. It cools over- heated muscles and inflamed joints and because of its mild diuretic qualities, helps drain edema and swelling from the injury site. When applied topically, lemongrass oil can help in reducing varicose veins by increasing blood flow and lymph drainage.
Lemongrass has antimicrobial properties, meaning it is effective against a broad range of bacteria, viruses and fungi. For example, it is often used to successfully combat MRSA infections (bacteria), Herpes simplex (virus), and Candida Albicans (fungi). In all cases, lemongrass, diluted with a carrier oil, can be used topically on areas of concern*, diffused to eliminate airborne pathogens and internally, by capsule or added to food or tea.
Lemongrass has anti-cancer properties. Researchers at Ben Gurion University in Israel discovered the citral in herbs like lemongrass kills cancer cells in vitro, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.
It also has insecticidal properties. Most insects are repelled by this scent so this essential oil can be diluted and sprayed on an animal’s bed, added to shampoo to repel fleas, or diffused to keep flies and mosquitoes away.
Lemongrass is reported to lower cholesterol.
